The word "darshan" is derived from the Sanskrit root "drish." "Drish" means "to see"—seeing elements with the gross eye, and subtle elements with the subtle eye (prajnachakshu). From its causal etymology, "darshan" means that through which one sees, that is, to gain knowledge. From its sensual etymology, it means knowledge. In English, "philosophy" is called "philosophy." The word "philosophy" comes from the Greek language. There are two different words in Greek: "philos," which means love or affection. The other word is "sophia," which means knowledge or wisdom. Thus, "philosophy" means love of knowledge or affection.
