The 18th century is considered a tragic period in Indian history. This century saw the disintegration of central power in Delhi, ending hopes of a progressive and orderly government, and ushering in a period of political and social disunity. This century was marked by horrific political, socially inadequate kings, and dire economic turmoil. The history of this century is a history of conspiracy, crime, and decline. This was India's dark age. Indian society of the 18th century was a mess of numerous evils. The conflicts between different religions, the caste system, the practice of sati, child marriage, the practice of purdah, slavery, and other evils had distorted Indian society, and people had fallen prey to immorality and vice, falling from the ladder of progress and ideals.
