The general meaning of saint poetry is poetry composed by saints. However, in the Hindi language, saint poetry refers to poetry composed by poets of the Gyanbhargi branch of the Nirgun Bhakti sect of the Bhakti period, known as the Golden Age of Hindi literature. In India, saint poetry is believed to have originated in 1267 AD with the great saint of Maharashtra, Shri Namdev. The saint poetry tradition is associated with the Nirgun poetry tradition of the Bhakti period of Hindi literature. Within this Nirgun poetry stream, flowed the saint poetry and Sufi poetry. Most scholars believe that a person who has attained the ultimate truth in the form of a saint is a saint. Prominent poets of this poetic tradition include Namdev, Kabirdas, Raidas, Nanak Malukdas, Dadu Dayal, Rajjabdas, Sundardas, etc.
